Tasting Notes

Bright medium ruby. Reticent but pure nose offers blackberry, violet, tar, licorice and minerals. Suave and silky-smooth in texture, and distinctly gentler than the 2005. A moderately concentrated wine that could use a bit more grip and thrust. But nicely balanced, and the tannins are sweet.

Score: 87 - 90

Stephen Tanzer, International Wine Cellar 01 May 2007

Extraordinary Derenoncourt wine which tastes more like a burgundy than a bordeaux and therefore stands out in the right bank crowd. Open topped fermenters apparently and pretty much made like a red burgundy. Very rich, opulent, sweet perfumed nose. Charming floral notes. Pretty marked oak influence on the finish but great charm on the front palate. Very distinctive! Tempting to give it an even higher mark for offering such novelty.

A garagiste offering that is impeccably well-made by consultant guru Stephane Derenoncourt, there are fewer than 1,000 cases of the 2006 Lucia, a blend of 90% Merlot and 10% Cabernet Franc. One-third of the vines in this tiny vineyard were planted in 1901. The deep purple-hued 2006 exhibits sweet, smoky, black currant, camphor, and graphite aromas. The explosive aromatics are matched by the dense, concentrated, opulent flavors that stain the palate. With no hardness or angularity, this beauty can be enjoyed during its first 10-15 years of life.

Score: 90 - 93
