Tasting Notes

The 2006 Bahans Haut-Brion exhibits classic notes of red currants, earth, and spice in its round, delicious, elegant, forward style. With medium body and velvety tannins, it is already delicious to drink, but it is capable of lasting 10-12 years

Score: 88

Tasted at Haut Brion. This is lacking some vigour on the nose, just faint whiffs of wet sand, blackberry and earth. Very subdued at the moment. The palate is much better, smooth on the entry with well integrated new oak. Blackberry, a touch of tar and black olive. Good weight for Bahans, unassuming with a sweet, sappy blackberry, black olive finish. Fine. Tasted April 2007.

Score: 88 - 90

More concentrated colour than the Chapelle de la Mission, the stablemate second wine. More opulent, ripe nose than either of the wines from La Mission. In this wine what seemed like austerity in the Mission wines seems like coolness. Very supple - a very good Bahans. Mellifluous with real lift though no enormous concentration. Just a slight inkiness on the finish shows the vintage. Not for very long keeping but lots of pleasure here.

Jancis Robinson MW, JancisRobinson.com Maturity: 2012-2018 16 April 2007

The second wine of Haut Brion representing 41% of production, this is 34% Cabernet Sauvignon, 34% Merlot and 30% Cabernet Franc. A more intense colour than La Chapelle. A rich, savoury nose with truffle, smoke and plummy fruit. Broad and round with sweet fruit and Graves minerality. Hefty, well-managed tannins.

Score: 89 - 91

Currants with mineral character. Medium-bodied, with fine tannins and a light, delicate, fruity finish.

Score: 85 - 88
