Tasting Notes

The 2020 Mangot is a heady, full-throttle wine, just as it was en primeur. Jammy dark red/purplish fruit, lavender, sweet oak and licorice are front and center. There's not much subtlety here, but that does not seem to be the goal. More importantly, though, the 2020 is not as ponderously heavy as some recent editions.

The 2020 Mangot is an inky, full-throttle wine. crème de cassis, chocolate, lavender, licorice and sweet spice give this unctuous Saint-Émilion its extroverted personality. There's not a ton of subtlety here, but the Mangot is not about that. Nicely done in this style.

The 2020 Mangot, matured in 30% new oak, offers ripe black plum, bilberry and loamy scents on the nose, and just a very slight hickory scent in the background that might derive from the 20% use of amphorae. The palate is medium-bodied with crunchy black fruit, moderate depth, good acidity and a solid finish that just needs to develop more complexity and kick on a little. Fine, but the barrel maturation will be crucial in taking this up another level.

Emerging from a beautiful vineyard on the eastern side of the appellation and 75% Merlot, 20% Cabernet Franc, and the rest Cabernet Sauvignon, the 2020 Château Mangot offers a classy, medium to full-bodied, textured yet elegant style to go with complex notes of bouquet garni, scorched earth, violets, and leafy herbs. With beautiful fruit (cassis/black cherries), ripe, polished tannins, and outstanding length, I see no reason it would not offer pleasure in its youth yet also cruise for 15-20 years in cold cellars.

I like the balance and tannin integration to this chewy, polished red. Blackberry, blueberry and hazelnut undertones. From organically grown grapes.

James Suckling, JamesSuckling.com 23 May 2021

Composed of 75% Merlot, 20% Cabernet Franc and 5% Cabernet Sauvignon, the deep garnet-purple colored 2020 Mangot is scented of ripe black plums, blackberry preserves and black cherry compote, followed by hints of licorice, dark chocolate and cardamom, with a waft of wild mushrooms. The medium to full-bodied palate gives a great intensity of juicy black fruits with soft, rounded tannins and just enough freshness to support, finishing earthy.

Lisa Perrotti-Brown MW, Wine Advocate, RobertParker.com Maturity: 2025-2040 20 May 2021

Bright plum colours full of flesh and bright fruits. Muscular on the attack, with poise and focus, and pulsating with blueberry fruits and saline-drenched minerality. Good stuff, enjoyable and impressively balanced with a grilled, smoked rosemary finish. 20% new oak, 30% amphora. Freres Todeschini are the owners here.
