Tasting Notes

The approximate blend of the 2019 Corton-Charlemagne Grand Cru is very promising, offering up notes of orange oil, white flowers, nutmeg and pear, followed by a full-bodied, layered and concentrated palate that's lively and elegantly textural, concluding with a long, penetrating finish. This is a very promising effort from the Domaine Bonneau du Martray team, and I look forward to revisiting the wine in bottle. Domaine Bonneau du Martray goes from strength to strength, and this was another impressive tasting with cellar master Emmanuel Hautus. As I wrote last year, the domaine's extensive holdings, when vinified parcel by parcel, give Hautus and his team a broad palette of blending components to choose from, a rare luxury in Burgundy and one that they appear to be exploiting to the fullest. At the press, Hautus told me that he tries to be more adaptive to the year, with foulage and press cycles tailored to each crop, rather than proceeding by default. Revisited in bottle, the 2018 Corton-Charlemagne showed brilliantly, and the 2019 is sure to surpass it. As a great admirer of the wonderful wines this domaine produced in the past, all this is very gratifying.

Score: 95 - 97
