Tasting Notes

The 2020 La Tour Blanche, which apparently was picked at a whopping 1.80hl/ha (no, that's not missing a zero) has a more backward bouquet than other 2020 Sauternes, atypical of an estate that usually comes out with all guns blazing even at this early stage. The palate is more expressive, featuring lemon sherbet, dried honey and saffron notes, and nicely balanced, with what feels like less residual sugar on the finish compared to recent vintages. Fine.

Full bottle 1,335 g. Undated cask sample. 89% Sémillon, 5.5% Sauvignon, 5.5% Muscadelle. Conversion to organic viticulture. Yield just 1.8 hl/ha!! 'Traditional' vinification with new barrels only for the Sémillon. Sauvignon and Muscadelle are vinified in tank for aromatic freshness. Pale orangey gold. That pear-juice/botrytis nose plus light, interesting cheesiness. Good energy and balance. This has some of that tarte Tatin juice character. Weight but not heaviness. Light smokiness. Impressive. But just look at that yield!

Full-bodied and layered with solid phenolic texture, sweetness and intensity. Dried fruit, such as pineapple. Flavorful finish.

The 2020 La Tour Blanche is gorgeous. Apricot, dried flowers, mint, chamomile, tangerine and coconut flesh out in the glass. Creamy, resonant and super-expressive, this is an absolute delight in 2020. All the elements are nicely balanced, and pretty floral accents on the finish make it impossible to resist a second taste.
