Tasting Notes

The 2019 Clos Vougeot Grand Cru has a more feisty bouquet of ample red fruit, singed leather, just a touch of wild mint and Provençal herbs. It is both complex and involving. The palate is medium-bodied and a little viscous on the entry, showing plenty of fruit concentration, but it's all channeled in one direction. Tensile and grippy, but at the same time refreshingly elegant, this finishes confit-like. Bon vin. Tasted blind at the Burgfest tasting.

The 2019 Clos de Vougeot Grand Cru comes from the upper part of the clos. One of my favorite aromatics from Bouchard, it is beautifully defined with effervescent red berry fruit, rose petals and basalt scents. The medium-bodied palate offers supple tannins framing pure dark berry fruit laced with white pepper and clove. Impressive mineralité comes through on the finely chiseled finish. This is a very well-crafted Clos de Vougeot.

This is the first wine to display prominent oak and it's not subtle with plenty of menthol character sitting atop the aromas of dark currant, plum and warm earth. There is fine cut and punch to the moderately concentrated flavors that possess solid size and weight, all wrapped in a lingering finish that is perhaps a bit less youthfully austere than it typically is. While not super-dense, I like the balance and in any event, it has the more than sufficient stuffing to reward extended cellaring.

The 2019 Clos Vougeot Grand Cru opens in the glass with aromas of wild berries, plums, loamy soil, incense and rose petals. Medium to full-bodied, deep and layered, it's rich and concentrated, built around a chassis of fine, powdery tannins and lively acids. Like so many of the region's more inherently structured sites this year, it's unusually elegant and seductive as a barrel sample.
