The 2018 Volnay Robardelle 1er Cru comes from a parcel of vines planted in 1926 that are very low-yielding. The bouquet is fragrant and floral, wilted iris petals infusing the black cherries and bilberry fruit. The palate is medium-bodied with lithe, supple tannins, fresh and focused, with just the right amount of edginess and sapidity toward the finish to beckon you back for another sip. This is a superb Volnay full of charm and character. This was a new address for me, and I liked what I tasted. You might describe it as a classic Burgundy, nothing overtly powerful, slighty darker fruit than others whilst retaining the elusive essence of ‘Pinoté’. Rossignol opined that he prefers the 2018 over 2019 and based on what I tasted I see why he thinks that. It’s not that his 2019s are bad in any sense, just that his 2018s are so good, particularly the Volnay Robardelle (not a Premier Cru often seen).
