Tasting Notes

The 2019 Aile d'Argent Blanc has more tropical fruit on the nose, pineapple and touches of lychee, flirting with red fruit aromas. A bit flabby? The palate is balanced with plenty of fatness, more rondeur compared to its peers, more extract, more of everything! Yet it does retain freshness and the aftertaste feels long. But this bottle is a bit oxidized and therefore I will not score it for now. Tasted blind at the Southwold annual tasting.

Neal Martin, Vinous.com 01 February 2023

The 2019 Aile d'Argent was picked 5-11 September, early in order to lock in the freshness and underwent partial malolactic fermentation. It is armed with an attractive bouquet of red apples, yellow plum and honeysuckle scents that gently waft from the glass. A touch of orange pith develops in the background with aeration. The palate is well balanced with a brisk, sharp opening, moderate weight, good tension with a touch of bitter lemon neatly counterbalancing the richness, whilst a potent spicy stem ginger note rounds things off nicely.

Rich apricot, white pear, juicy nectarine, coriander seed and mouthwatering salinity on the finish. Mouton is never afraid of showcasing the texture of its white wine rather than just concentrating on acidity, and this is a gourmet, enticingly succulent wine. 17% malolactic fermentation, 50% new oak. Harvest September 5 to 11. Young, full of flavour, personality and kick.

Jane Anson, Inside Bordeaux Maturity: 2022-2034 23 June 2022

Rich and ripe apricot and powerful nectarine aromatics on the nose, with juicy white peach flesh, given focus by bitter orange zest and chalky tannins. This feels creamy, but there is clear lift on the finish, with touches of fennel and dill, and hints of white truffle that will deepen as it ages. Good quality, enjoyable, and full of personality. Bottled in June 2021. Harvest September 5 to 11.

You just know that Aile d'Argent is going to suit a vintage like this, where the warmth of the summer accentuates the rich apricot, white pear and juicy nectarine flavours of the wine. This tiny drop of Muscadelle gives lift and florality to the finish, and overall there is width, depth and texture aplenty, with a fabulous lick of salinity on the finish. Does a great job of walking the tightrope - and the team under Philippe Dhalluin are not afraid of underlining the texture of the wine, giving 17% of the production some malolactic fermentation, one of the rare Bordeaux whites to do so. Harvest September 7 to 11.

Mouton's white is a blend this year of 61% Sauvignon Blanc, 38% Semillon and 1% Muscadelle, harvested from the 5th to the 11th of September. This 2019 Aile d'Argent sails of of the glass with beguiling scents of pink grapefruit, lemon drops, orange blossoms and candied ginger with hints of jasmine, lime cordial and coriander seed. The medium-bodied palate reveals compelling poise and sophistication, with a racy line of freshness lifting the citrus and spice layers to a long, opulent finish. Very impressive!

The 2019 Aile d'Argent, Mouton Rothschild's white is laced with hints of pineapple, mint, white flowers, apple and lemon confit. An exotic note from the Muscadelle add character. In 2019, Aile d'Argent is distinguished by its energy, even with a touch of malolactic fermentation, and a bit more restraint than in the past, all huge positives.

Antonio Galloni, Vinous.com 01 June 2020

A very exotic Aile d’Argent with dried-mango, fresh-pineapple, and sliced-lemon aromas and flavors. Full-bodied and very ripe, yet it’s framed by bright acidity. Tangy and vivid with a long, intense finish. Exciting. Contrastive. 38% semillon and the rest sauvignon blanc and gris.
