Tasting Notes

Medium red. Roasted currant, lead pencil, grilled nuts, tobacco and minerals on the nose. Smooth, vinous and concentrated, with lovely depth of flavor and ripe acidity for the vintage. Finishes with even tannins and excellent length. A very successful '97.

Score: 91

(also sur colle) Very good deep ruby. Blackcurrant, cedar and Havana tobacco on the nose. Lush but vibrant, with superb depth of flavor and layered texture for the vintage. Dense but tender. Ripely oaky finish features even, tongue-dusting tannins.

Score: 91 - 92

Red-ruby color. More classic blackcurrant, licorice and shoe polish aromas. Then, lovely sappy sweetness on the palate, with impressive inner-mouth sweetness. More solidly structured than the Forts de Latour. This is just the kind of deceptively accessible '97 that may show more power and grip after another year in barrel. Nicely integrated, lowish acidity (but the pH here is actually lower than that of the '95). Boasts excellent length for the year.

Score: 90 - 93

A flavorful, savory Latour, without a great deal of density or power, the 1997 exhibits sweet, walnut-tinged, black currant fruit intertwined with minerals and subtle wood. Nicely-textured, with adequate acidity, ripe tannin, and a medium-bodied finish, this smooth effort should drink well for 12-14 years.

Score: 89

…Will be a surprisingly fine wine….It possesses more tannin and depth than most 1997's along with medium to full body… Sweet jammy fruit is intertwined with dried herbs, coffee, and earth in this saturated ruby/purple colured wine

Score: 90 - 91
