Tasting Notes

One of the wines of the vintage, Marcoux’s 2004 Chateauneuf du Pape Vieilles Vignes is an elegant, ethereal version of this cuvee. More pure and delineated than the classic cuvee, it offers a gorgeous perfume of kirsch liqueur, seaweed wrapper, licorice, ground pepper and garrigue that flows to a medium to full-bodied, pure, elegant and seamless palate. Showing the freshness of the vintage, it is drinking at point, yet will easily continue to evolve for another decade or so. The sister duo of Sophie and Catherine Armenier produced some of the most exciting wines in the vintage.

The 2004 Chateauneuf du Pape Vieilles Vignes has a saturated dark ruby/purple color and the tell-tale black raspberry, blueberry, and cassis notes intermixed with black truffle and floral notes. Moderately firm tannins give it a more structured feel than the regular bottling and the wine again shares wonderful purity, texture, and length. This is another beauty that should hit its peak in 2-4 years and last for 15 or more.

The 2004 Chateauneuf du Pape Vieilles Vignes, which spends its life in cement tanks prior to being bottled unfined and unfiltered (like all the other reds at Marcoux), does not have the mass or intensity of the 1998, 2000, 2001, or 2003, but it is a special effort. Elegant, pure notes of creme de cassis, boysenberry, licorice, and smoke are present in this full-bodied wine which has zesty underlying acidity, terrific definition, and beautiful, savory, concentrated fruit flavors that linger on the palate. It is no wimpy wine at about 16% alcohol, but it is surprisingly fresh, elegant, and lively. It should drink well for 12-15 years.

Dark red. Incredibly fragrant nose offers intense scents of raspberry, blackberry and kirsch underscored by a vibrant mineral tone. Lush, creamy and very sweet, with strong red and dark fruit flavors, exotic spice accents and a smooth, velour-like texture. Whatever tannins this might have are completely absorbed by the deep, concentrated fruit. Finishes very sweet, with exceptional length and bright mineral lift.

Very round and supple up front, with raspberry and fig fruit caressed by silky tannins. Long finish shows kirsch, mineral, graphite and dark chocolate hints. Really stretches out, with the structure becoming more evident as it tightens up in the glass. Needs cellaring to let it put on all its weight. Best from 2008 through 2024. 315 cases made.
