The 2015 Nuits Saint-Georges Les Vaucrains 1er Cru has one of the most candied and exotic bouquets from within the group of wines tasted from the appellation, featuring copious red fruit, maraschino cherry and canned prune. Fortunately, with aeration it seems to calm down and gain more definition and mineralité. The palate is well balanced with crisp acidity and firm, grippy tannins that provide structure and ballast. The mineralité surfaces toward a vivid, blue-blooded finish that tempts you back for another sip even as you realize that you are broaching this Vaucrains a decade prematurely. Impressive. Tasted blind at the annual Burgfest tasting. Score: 93 Neal Martin, Vinous.com Maturity: 2024-2050 01 November 2018 |

The 2015 Nuits Saint Georges 1er Cru Les Vaucrains has a sophisticated bouquet, very pure, a mixture of red and black fruit that are beautifully defined. There is disarming purity here. The palate is medium-bodied with supple, ripe tannin. There are layers of red berry fruit laced with white pepper and a hint of marmalade, an edgy bitterness towards the finish that lends wonderful tension and the length that is just outstanding. Pick of the bunch for me this year, and a wine that I expect to land at the top of my banded score once in bottle. Once again the nose is more deeply pitched still as the earth, humus and forest floor characters are even more prominent on the plum, dark currant and violet scents. The mid-palate of the big-bodied and overtly muscular flavors is almost surprisingly supple but the impression doesn't last as the markedly firm structure asserts its influence almost immediately on the marvelously persistent, palate coating and perfectly well-balanced finale. This is a big but not massive wine that is reference standard Vaucrains. Patience, and lots of it, will be required however and it would be pointless to buy this without a specific intent to cellar it. In a word, brilliant. Don't miss! Bright ruby-red. Liqueur-like ripeness to the aromas of kirsch, cassis and dark chocolate. Juicy and powerful but tightly coiled and imploded; the densest but most clenched of these 2015s today. Finishes powerfully tannic and very long, with an emerging touch of sweetness and lovely violet lift. Like the Cailles and Saint-Georges, this fruit was picked at about 13% potential alcohol.
