Tasted blind at the annual "Burgfest" tasting in Beaune. The 2012 Nuits St Georges 1er Cru les Vaucrains has a fragrant bouquet with ebullient red cherry and wild strawberry fruit that is very well defined and shows prudent use of new oak. The palate is medium-bodied with fine tannin, a gentle grip here with superb balance. Again, the oak is tangible but simpatico with the fruit profile (blackcurrant and damson) with a healthy dash of white pepper sprinkled over the finish. This is one of the best wines from Gouges in 2012 - excellent! Score: 93 Neal Martin, Wine Advocate, RobertParker.com Maturity: 2017-2035 01 October 2015 |

Medium red, a bit less saturated than the Les Saint-Georges. Sexy, very ripe nose offers scents of redcurrant, strawberry, raspberry, mocha, porcini, spices and earth. Boasts excellent sucrosité and early appeal, offering highly concentrated flavors of raspberry, strawberry and mocha. Tannins are ripe, powerful and suave. This almost confectionery wine is much easier to taste today than the Saint-Georges but has the stuffing for a long and graceful evolution in bottle. But it will surely go through a sullen stage in bottle at some point in the near future. Score: 94 Stephen Tanzer, Vinous.com Maturity: 2025-2038 01 March 2015 |
