Tasting Notes

A barrel sample, the 2016 de Fargues has a pale lemon color and quite a profoundly scented nose at this nascent stage, with cedar, honey toast, orange marmalade and warm pineapple with hints of grapefruit and apricot preserves plus a spicy undercurrent. The palate sings of savory and citrus layers with a decadent oiliness to the texture and fantastic freshness, finishing long.

Score: 95 - 97

The 2016 Chateau de Fargues was showing a lot of SO2 on the nose, although underneath there is plenty of botrytised fruit waiting to be unveiled. The palate is well balanced with a superb line of acidity that cuts through the rich and pure botrytised fruit, segueing into a tensile finish that leaves the mouth tingling with glee. One can feel the weight of those marmalade and quince notes, perhaps with greater presence than any other Sauternes this year. As usual, it will need several years in bottle, but it is destined to be a great Château de Fargues.

Light nose. 'Lur Saluces' in jazzy lettering prominent on the label. Very classic, polished, pear-juice quality. Utterly classic and made for long ageing.

A very rich style, with broad apricot, ginger cream, heather honey and glazed peach flavors. White ginger notes give the finish needed tension, while a green plum edge add cut and lift. Impressive range and energy for the vintage.

A true success in a challenging vintage, this glides above so much of Sauternes in a different register of elegance and tension. It is a little richer than in my favourite vintages of de Fargues, but this is a gourmet wine at the top of its game. Freshly cut lemon slices, orange blossom and white truffle.

Score: 96
