A discreet touch of wood sets off the agreeably fresh nose that combines spice and earth wisps with those of red and dark currant. Here too there is good volume if not necessarily impressive density to the attractively textured flavors that terminate in a youthfully austere finish. The 2017 Nuits-Saint-Georges Au Bas de Combe was a little muted and compressed by transient reduction when I tasted it from barrel, but it's a promising wine, exhibiting notes of rich soil, berries and game bird, framed by a touch of smoky oak. The 2017 Nuits Saint-Georges Au Bas de Combe, from the village crus just below Les Boudots, has a straightforward and quite open bouquet. There is purity rather than power. The palate is crisp and fresh, with crunchy black currant and bilberry fruit, and quite strict and linear. I am seeking more substance toward the finish here, and a touch more persistence.
