Tasting Notes

The 2018 Les Astéries is a rich, heady wine that marries fruit richness with energy, a super appealing combination, in my book. Succulent red-toned fruit, lavender, rose petal, new oak and chocolate all flesh out as this expressive, deep Saint-Émilion shows off its allure.

The 2018 Les Astéries is brilliant. In this range, Les Astéries is distinguished by its aromatic kick and overall intensity, both of which give it tremendous poise. Linear and tense, but with all of the richness that is such a signature of these wines, Les Astéries possesses tremendous energy. Blackberry jam, chocolate, spice, new leather, licorice and incense all build in this potent, virile Saint-Émilion. There is plenty to look forward to, especially once the tannins soften.

The 2018 Les Asteries has straightforward bouquet of black cherries mixed with iodine, a little more floral than 12 months ago, though I would like to see more complexity (as I did out of barrel). The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannins, demonstrating more flesh and depth than the Pontet Labrie, well-judged acidity and good grip on the finish, which finally reveals the complexity that Les Asteries can produce. Maybe it is just a question of time (as Depeche Mode once sang), so give it 3–4 years in bottle.

The 2018 Les Asteries has a generous bouquet of ample black cherry, cassis and iodine aromas that need to manifest more complexity by the time of bottling. The dense palate is medium-bodied with supple tannins, a fine bead of acidity and a solid, grippy finish that will need five years to soften. I suspect this Saint-Émilion has tightened up and put on weight since en primeur, and it will require cellaring. Hopefully the aromatics will up their game.

The 2018 Les Astéries comes from more hard-packed limestone soils, so this cuvée tends to be one of the more mineral-driven, backward, structured wines in the lineup, and the 2018 is no exception. Dense purple-hued, with a powerful nose of blackcurrants, plums, candied violets, dark chocolate, and scorched earth, it hits the palate with a massive amount of chalky, mineral-like nuances as well as medium to full-bodied richness, terrific overall balance, lots of tannins, and a great finish. A blend of 83% Merlot and 17% Cabernet Franc brought up in 80% new barrels, hide bottles for 5-7 years and enjoy over the following 20-25 years. This is pure, classic, limestone and mineral-driven Saint-Emilion.

Coming from hard-packed limestone soils, the 2018 Les Astéries is more backward and structured, with serious amounts of minerality in its full-bodied, concentrated style. Giving up beautiful notes of blackcurrants, smoked earth, violets, and chocolate, it’s more fresh and focused than some prior vintages yet still has a beautiful opulence and hedonistic slant. It’s going to benefit from short-term cellaring, and I suspect it will keep for two decades or more. The blend is 83% Merlot and 17% Cabernet Franc that’s aging in 80% new barrels.

The 2018 Les Asteries is composed of 83% Merlot and 17% Cabernet Franc and has a 3.65 pH. Deep garnet-purple colored, it has a bombastic nose of baked black cherries, stewed plums and mulberries, with suggestions of fragrant earth, spice box and unsmoked cigars. The full-bodied palate is rich, plush and jam-packed with juicy black fruits, finishing with lingering exotic spice notes. One for the hedonists! Les Asteries is from the JCP Maltus portfolio of skillfully crafted Saint-Émilion wines. Neil White is the head winemaker, and Thomas Duclos is a consultant here. The vineyard is composed of thin clay over limestone.

The vineyard is composed of thin clay over limestone. The 2018 Les Asteries is a blend of 83% Merlot and 17% Cabernet Franc and has a 3.65 pH. Deep purple-black in color, it is a little shy to begin, opening out to give fragrant rose hip tea, violets, forest floor and cigar box notions over a core of wild blueberries, kirsch and warm plums plus a waft of cinnamon stick. Medium to full-bodied, the palate has lovely freshness contracting the generous red and black fruits, supported by velvety tannins, finishing long and with loads of mineral sparks coming through.

A dense and juicy red with a firm and silky tannin structure that complements the ripe black fruit and licorice undertones.

A well-polished wine in the making, with vanilla and tobacco accents along the edges of the plum and raspberry core. Streamlined finish.
