Tasting Notes

Black-plum, dried-herb, tobacco and some meaty aromas. It’s medium-to full-bodied with firm, fine tannins. Savory and salty finish. Tight and layered. Drink from 2023.

Score: 93

Shows tightness and focus with blackcurrant and olive character on the nose and palate. Medium body, fine tannins and a flavorful finish.

The 2018 Lanessan remains outgoing on the nose of black cherries and cedar, slightly more floral than I remember from the barrel tasting but still attractive. The palate is medium-bodied with sappy black fruit, chewy and quite dense for the vintage, and there’s an unwanted lactic texture on the finish. Maybe this is going through a odd phase, or maybe it’s because my sample was a half-bottle, but it falls a little below what I hoped for out of barrel.

The 2018 Lanessan has quite a high-toned bouquet for the property, much showier than usual, although I appreciate the attractive black cherry and boysenberry fruit laced with cedar and sous-bois. The medium-bodied palate is quite bold and assertive, offering chewy tannins and good depth; what it lacks in finesse, it compensates in sheer substance. This may well improve with continued bottle age.

The 2018 Lanessan is deep garnet-purple colored with black cherries, cassis, mulberries and baked plums on the nose with herbs, earth and tea hints. Medium to full-bodied, it is a little chewy and herbal with the oak poking through on the finish.

I have enjoyed Lanessan over the last few years, and there's a lot to take note of here. It's a pretty serious take on the vintage with a strong architecture of cassis fruits, pencil lead and slate, more 2016 than 2015 in style. It should age well. Good value. Harvested 24 September to 16 October. Ageing is in 33% new oak.

The 2018 Lanessan is a striking Haut-Médoc. Pliant, supple and inviting, the 2018 has so much to offer. Bright floral notes and soft, pliant red plum fruit give the wine tons of immediacy and pure appeal. Tasted two times.

Score: 88 - 91
