Tasting Notes

The 2018 Belgrave is a fairly straightforward Haut-Médoc. Black cherry, gravel, game and leather give this strapping, rustic wine a good deal of character. It would be nice to see more delineation and overall persistence.

Score: 88

Antonio Galloni, Vinous.com Maturity: 2021 - 2028 25 August 2021

The 2018 Belgrave has a tightly wound bouquet of blackberry, damp earth, freshly rolled tobacco and a very light marine influence. The palate is sweet on the entry with saturated tannins and plenty of ripe black cherry and strawberry fruit, although it needs a little more complexity on the finish.

Score: 87

Neal Martin, Vinous.com Maturity: 2023 - 2033 18 August 2021

Always a solid, well-made wine, the 2018 Château Belgrave sports a darker ruby/purple color as well as attractive notes of black cherries, redcurrants, sandalwood, leafy tobacco, and cedar. It's medium-bodied and has a soft, supple texture, ripe tannins, and a great finish. Readers looking for a terrific, charming, classic Bordeaux won't regret buying a few bottles.

The 2018 Château Belgrave is a hidden little gem that’s well worth seeking out. Darker fruits, roasted coffee, and earthy notes all emerge from this medium-bodied, juicy, focused Haut-Médoc that picks up more complex floral notes with time in the glass. It’s balanced, offers bright acidity and firm tannins, and will benefit from 2-4 years of bottle age.

Score: 89 - 91

Medium to deep garnet-purple colored, the 2018 Belgrave reveals notes of redcurrant jelly, cassis and pencil shavings, plus touches of lavender, damp soil and tobacco leaf. The medium-bodied palate has appealing freshness, lifted by attractive herbal accents and framed with chewy tannins, finishing savory.

Score: 87

Lisa Perrotti-Brown MW, Wine Advocate, RobertParker.com Maturity: 2021 - 2028 11 July 2021

Deep garnet-purple in color, the 2018 Belgrave reveals scents of crushed blackberries, wild blueberries and fresh blackcurrants with touches of damp soil, fungi, charcuterie and sautéed herbs. Full-bodied and completely packed with rich, black fruit layers, it has a solid foundation of firm, chewy tannins and just enough freshness, finishing long and earthy.

Score: 89 - 91

Increasingly consistent and impressive wines are emerging from this property. This 2018 takes quite a while to unfurl, showing its seriousness and desire to age. It's a violet-edged wine in the glass, less effortless and exuberant than some but with beautifully handled extraction. The flavours have persistency and grip, with touches of slate and pepper giving a real show of minerality and spice. 33% new oak.

Score: 92

Pure and fresh, with floral lift to the beam of cassis and bitter cherry fruit. Mineral-edged finish.
