Tasting Notes

The 2018 Beauregard is forward, supple and very easy to like. Succulent red cherry, plum, mocha, espresso and new leather all wrap around the palate. This racy, opulent Pomerol is not especially complex, but it is wonderfully open knit and inviting. The new French oak is at the limit of being overpowering, but the wine's balance is solid. This tasty Pomerol is a terrific choice for drinking now and over the next 10-15 years.

Beauregard is very pretty and accessible in 2018. Medium in body and quite expressive, the 2018 offers a lovely combination of rich dark fruit allied with just enough structure to give the wine energy while remaining quite supple in feel. Hints of leather, smoke, licorice and lavender add shades of nuance to a core of inky blue/purplish fruit in this easygoing, inviting Pomerol. The blend is 75% Merlot and 25% Cabernet Franc, with the Franc adding quite a bit of aromatic depth and supporting structure. It will be interesting to see if the team at Smith Haut Lafitte can take Beauregard to the next level. Tasted three times.

The 2018 Beauregard is crisp and focused on the nose of truffle-tinged black fruit flanked by sous-bois and freshly rolled tobacco; gentle but persuasive. The palate is medium-bodied with grainy tannins, quite tight and slightly angular in style. It is still rustic and a little rough-hewn compared to its peers, though it has charm and I appreciate the dash of black pepper on the aftertaste.

The 2018 Beauregard has a fine bouquet with black fruit mixed with truffle and loamy aromas, although I would like more vigour. The palate is medium-bodied with chewy tannins, a little rustic in style with some bitterness towards the finish. Not bad, but I was hoping for more finesse from Beauregard this year.

Loads of meaty black cherries, currants, truffle, chocolate, and tobacco emerge from the 2018 Château Beauregard. Full-bodied, it has a round, elegant texture, classic Pomerol finesse, silky tannins, and a great finish. Based on 75% Merlot and 25% Cabernet Franc, this pure, balanced, outstanding Pomerol will keep for 15-20 years in cold cellars.

The 2018 Château Beauregard is a deep, concentrated Pomerol that’s going to benefit from bottle age. Classic notes of dark fruits, toasted spiced, roasted herbs and cedar all give way to a medium to full-bodied 2018 that offers a big mid-palate, nicely integrated acidity, and ripe tannins. It’s a touch primordial, but it has class and balance and is going to come together beautifully in bottle. The blend of the 2018 is 75% Merlot and 25% Cabernet Franc.

The 2018 Beauregard is a blend of 75% Merlot and 25% Cabernet Franc. Deep garnet-purple colored, it springs from the glass with lively notes of raspberry pie, ripe blackberries and plum preserves, plus suggestions of pencil shavings, dusty soil and crushed rocks. The palate is medium-bodied, softly textured and delivers open-knit black and red fruit flavors with just enough lift on the mid-palate and finish to give it compelling vivacity.

Viticulture at Beauregard is organic, as at the sister property Smith Haut Lafitte, but Beauregard only lost about 15% of the crop to mildew. Composed of 75% Merlot and 25% Cabernet Franc, the deep garnet-purple colored 2018 Beauregard develops slowly to reveal a core of blackberry compote, plum preserves and blueberry pie with touches of smoked meats, tobacco, baking spices, yeast extract and fragrant earth. Full, rich, velvety and packed with rich, expressive black fruit preserves, it has plenty of freshness, finishing long and spicy.

There is lots of density here but it shows a lovely supple side to the fruits with intense damson and black cherry alongside swirls of chocolate and a patisserie choux bun touch of gentle creaminess. A good job, and a wine that’s easy to approach with a build through the palate joined by layers of tannins that are a little deceptive. 3.77pH.
