The 2017 Côtes du Rhône Syrah is a step up, with more richness and depth in its darker fruits, peppery herbs, and smoky notes. From vines on the edge of Côte Rôtie and all Syrah, mostly destemmed and brought up in older barrels, drink this medium to full-bodied, nicely concentrated, fruit-forward beauty any time over the coming 4-5 years. Slightly bigger, richer and riper than the IGP Syrah, the 2017 Cotes du Rhone is medium to full-bodied, creamy and supple, with similar notes of crushed stone, a fumé-like character. But it also has blackberries, black olives and hints of espresso. It finishes silky and long. Jean-Paul Jamet points out that it comes from schist soils identical to Côte Rôtie but from younger vines. Like the IGP, it's destemmed and aged in old barrels.
