Tasting Notes

Mid to pale ruby. Round, vaguely fungal nose with the merest hint of raspberry jam - some chaptalisation effect? As with the 2005, acidity hits the palate first and then soft, half-resolved tannins. Quite textured and a little stringy. I wouldn’t want to convince a newcomer of the delights of DRC with this particular wine. It’s certainly admirably persistent but seems decidedly teenage at present - neither youthfully bright nor mature and interesting. Some slightly green notes. A bit severe.

Good full red. Pure, highly perfumed aromas of cassis, licorice, minerals and flowers. Wonderfully precise and taut in the mouth, with lovely sweetness and terrific verve. A delicate musky quality adds to the wine's complexity. An uncommonly strong vintage for this wine, from a crop level of just 25 hectoliters per hectare. (92+ points)

Stephen Tanzer, International Wine Cellar 01 March 2004

Knockout sexy black fruit aromas trimmed in a deft touch of oak and distinct animale notes with expressive, full, pure, sweet and quite powerful flavors and a long, persistent, mouth coating finish. The amount of sève is impressive as is the sheer spiciness and this is a good deal more refined than it usually is. A great vintage for this wine.
