Tasting Notes

This is still carrying noticeable wood though it is not enough to dominate the wet stone, white flower and pear aromas. There is impressive richness as well as real volume to the large-scaled flavors that retain a clear sense of detail and plenty of the hallmark minerality on the lightly wood-infused but explosive finish that is also clean and dry.

Samuel Billaud's 2010 Chablis Les Clos bursts from the glass with endless layers of nuance. Hints of licorice, smoke and slate add complexity to the generous yellow stone fruits. The Clos was vinified and aged exclusively in a single 450-liter oak barrel, which separates it from the rest of the wines in the lineup. Although it is quite striking, the oak influence is a bit dominant in my view, largely because this vintage the oak was new. The 2011 (also reviewed in this issue), from a technically weaker vintage, shows much better integration of the oak, as the barrel is no longer new.
