Dark and inward. Succulent black cherry, smoke, leather, liquorice, menthol and dark spice all run through this unctuous, super-concentrated Barolo. In most vintages, the Colonnello is a bit more aromatic and light on its feet, while the 2014 is a decidedly rich, heady wine, and yet all the elements are in the right place. Score: 92 Antonio Galloni, Vinous.com Maturity: 2020-2034 01 February 2019 |

Cherry and berry aromas with dried flowers. Some chocolate, too. Full-bodied, layered and rich for a 2014. Plenty of fruit and a juicy finish. Drink or hold. Score: 93 James Suckling, JamesSuckling.com Maturity: 2018+ 24 September 2018 |

The 2014 Barolo Bussia Colonnello lags behind the other cru expressions at this early point in its drinking window. The bouquet offers less intensity, although the wine does ultimately build forward momentum and power in the mouth. Fruit aromas are well represented in the 2014 vintage, although the nose is still timid and closed at this point. This wine saw 29 months in oak, which is three months more than average, and the extended oak aging is directed at building that aromatic intensity. Anise seed and balsam herb rise to the top. Colonnello requires more oxygen and bottle aging.instead. Score: 91 Monica Larner, Wine Advocate, RobertParker.com Maturity: 2020-2035 29 June 2018 |

Slightly more cooked fruit in style than their Cicala, perhaps slightly more open in terms of perfume, but still with the powerful, punchy tannic grip that coats the mouth. Lovely, nuanced length with spice, tar, black syrup and rich black fruits. (RH) Score: 18 Richard Hemming, JancisRobinson.com Maturity: 2020-2040 05 June 2018 |
