Tasting Notes

Jesus Sastre of Vina Sastre is one of the most talented young vine growers in Ribera del Duero, making wine in its most renowned village of La Hora close to Pingus, Vega Sicilia, and Aalto PS. A pioneer of organic wine growing here, Sastre is best known for the small production Pesus (which sells for £200-300 per bottle), but has now also taken over full control of Regina Vides. Grapes come from a plot of 90 year old vines located at over 800m above sea level. Production from these old wines is less than 25hl/ha, making this a very concentrated wine but with appealing elegance. In his Ribera 2015 report, Gutierrez awarded Regina Vides his 3rd highest score (after Pingus, and Vega Sicilia Res Especial).

This time I found more finesse and balance in the 2015 Regina Vides than in their top bottling Pesus. It's still very young and was only bottled in July 2017, after some 18 months in new French oak barrels. I especially noticed the roasted and toasty, smoky aromas from the wood, but those should get better integrated with some more time in bottle. It's a heady and powerful red, but it's better balanced than the other wines from the year, which delivered very powerful and warm wines with high alcohol levels. This is a more classical profile than Pesus; there is more nuance, depth and elegance and, ultimately, what I find more important: balance. 6,000 bottles produced.
