Tasting Notes

This is warm, featuring a gush of dark plum and blackberry puree flavors cruising through, with light tar and licorice notes as well. A fleshy and forward style, with just enough grip for balance. Tasty. Best from 2021 through 2031.

The second wine of the estate, the 2016 La Reserve de Léoville Barton is also Cabernet-dominated yet includes 20% Merlot and 4% Cabernet Franc. It has notable purity as well as medium to full-bodied notes of mulled cherries and cassis intermixed with plenty of graphite and obvious minerality. It’s not one of the easygoing, simple second wines and has good concentration, plenty of acidity, and ample length. Give it 3-4 years of bottle age, and I suspect it’s capable of lasting for two decades.

Coal smoke and dark, stony minerals create a dramatic, moody aura here, around spicy red berries and black cherries. The palate has great energy and verve with cocoa-dusted,wild berries and an immaculate, fresh and sleek finish. Second wine of Léoville Barton. Try from 2023.

The 2016 La Reserve de Léoville-Barton is a very pretty second wine. Stylistically, the Reserve is a bit riper and more overt than readers are likely to expect from Léoville Barton, but that is not a bad thing for a wine that is meant to be enjoyed on the young side. Succulent dark cherry, plum, chocolate, leather and spice are all generous in this racy Saint-Julien.

The 2016 La Réserve de Léoville Barton has pleasant light blackberry, raspberry and rose petal scents on the nose; hints of melted tar and licorice develop with aeration. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannin, smooth texture and gentle grip. I like the focus and finesse displayed by this second wine, which should offer 8 to 10 years of pleasure if you can resist temptation.
