Tasting Notes

The 2016 La Chenade, the Lalande de Pomerol from Denis Durantou, was bottled at the end of May 2018. It has a beautiful, well-defined bouquet that offers charming scents of wild strawberry, red currant and crushed stone. The palate is medium-bodied with an almost Burgundian tannin profile. This La Chenade is silky in texture and perfectly balanced, revealing palpable mineralité at its core. A stupendous wine from Durantou that oozes class and will give at least a decade’s worth of drinking pleasure.

The 2016 La Chenade is a blend of 80% Merlot and 20% Cabernet Franc from Denis Durantou's estate in Lalande-de-Pomerol. It was picked 24-29 September for the Merlot and 6 October for the Cabernet Franc at 39 hectoliters per hectare and then matured in 40% new oak. It has a lovely nose that needed some coaxing from the glass, eventually revealing black cherries and touches of bergamot with Earl Grey following later. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannin, fresh right from the start, very harmonious with an elegant, quite minerally finish. Very elegant, very suave, very promising.

The 2016 La Chenade offers a striking interplay of sweet red berry/plum fruit, blood orange, mint and exotic spice. Cabernet Franc aromatics are super-expressive in this pliant, mid-weight Lalande de Pomerol, with rose petal, star anise and savory herb overtones that emerge in the glass. La Chenade shows just how appealing 2016 is, even among humbler appellations. The 2016 is 80% Merlot and 20% Cabernet Franc.

The 2016 La Chenade is plump, juicy and absolutely delicious. Soft and pliant, with silky tannins, the 2016 will drink well upon release. Sweet floral and spice notes infuse a core of dark red stone fruit in this polished, classy Lalande de Pomerol from Denis Durantou. Tasted two times.

Medium garnet-purple colored, the 2016 La Chenade opens with tar and chargrill scents over a core of warm blackberries and black cherries with a waft of raspberry leaves. Medium to full-bodied, it fills the mouth with tarry black fruits, structured with chewy tannins and finishing on a dried herbs note.

Lisa Perrotti-Brown MW, Wine Advocate, RobertParker.com Maturity: 2020-2027 30 November 2018

80% Merlot, 20% Cabernet Franc. Round and ripe, with glossy fresh fruit and high but rounded tannins leading to a cappucino finish. High quality wine that tastes far more expensive than its likely pricetag.

80% Merlot, 20% Cabernet Franc on gravelly part of Cruzelles. Always picked first by Denis Durantou because it's the warmest of his terroirs. New oak 40%. 1,700 cases. Luscious and florally perfumed. Not immensely long but hugely enjoyable. GV

A slightly high-pitched version, with bright cherry and red currant fruit carried by a sleek structure. Doesn't show a ton of range but remains fresh and pure.

So delicious already with delicious depth and fruitiness, yet this always retains its balance and length. Fine tannins and a raspberry, cassis finish. You want to drink this now.
