Tasting Notes

Intense ruby color. Powerfully scented bouquet evokes ripe dark berries, plum compote, cola, vanilla bean and spicecake, with a smoky overlay. Round, palate-staining dark fruit flavors boast noteworthy depth and are quite sweet, but there's structure too. Becomes chewier with air and picks up an alluring candied violet quality, along with a note of black cardamom. Leaves sweet black and blue fruit notes behind on the long, sappy finish. This won't convince those with Old World preferences but fans of extroverted Aussie shiraz will love it.

The flagship wine is the 2005 Black Guts Shiraz, sourced from estate Shiraz vines yielding a meager 1 to 1.5 tons of fruit per acre. It was aged for 30 months in 35% new French and American oak and 65% in old French barriques. Saturated purple in color, it offers up its characteristic sexy, kinky, exotic bouquet of smoke, wild blueberry, meat, game, mineral, and bacon. Layered, succulent, and exceptionally long, this already complex Shiraz will evolve for several years with a prime drinking window from 2012 to 2025. Rusden is where the gifted Christian Canute makes wine on the family property in Barossa. He has a unique ability to produce wines of great finesse combined with the intensity and power obtained from the best Barossa Valley fruit.
