Tasting Notes

Already bottled, the 2016 Crozes-Hermitage Domaine from Yann Chave is a solid 2016 that possesses a broad, expansive texture, medium-bodied richness and more mid-palate depth than most. Offering up notes of ripe blackberries, plums, peppery herbs and bouquet garni, it has ripe tannin and enough depth and density to keep through 2026.

The 2016 Crozes Hermitage features dark notes of asphalt, plum and licorice in a medium to full-bodied format, with a ripe, creamy mid-palate. Already approachable, it finishes with supple tannins and a burst of peppery spice. It should drink well for another 6-7 years. The soft-spoken Yann Chave owns 18.5 hectares in Crozes-Hermitage, all of which are in the area of Chassis, a terroir of galets roulés and red clays. He also has 1.2 hectares in Hermitage, in the lieux-dits of Les Beaumes and Péleat. Viticulture has been organic since 2007. He points out that 2014 and 2016 are better for whites than 2015, which he calls, "too heavy." For the reds, he says he loves 1999 and he thinks 2015 is a repeat of that fabulous vintage.
