Tasting Notes

The sophomore 2015 Lions de Batailley is a blend of 60% Cabernet Sauvignon, 33% Merlot, 6% Cabernet Franc and 1% Petit Verdot and represents just over one-third of the total production. I appreciate the nose here, very perfumed and well defined with blackcurrant pastilles, cedar and mint. The palate is medium-bodied with supple ripe tannin on the entry, a mixture of red and black fruit, smooth in texture with a touch of orange rind and spice toward the finish. This is a fine deuxième vin from Batailley.

Some impressive presence and depth to this second wine of Château Batailley. It offers ample oak spices and earthy notes amid aromas of raspberries and red cherry compote. The palate is energetic and nicely arranged with smooth tannins that cast a gently grainy texture through the finish. 60% cabernet sauvignon, 33% merlot, 6% cabernet franc amd 1% petit verdot. Try from 2021.

The new second wine of Batailley shows finesse and sense of place. Spice and dark fruit character. Fine tannins.

Good Cabernet cassis fruit - the first ever second wine from Batailley, using one third of the crop.

33% Merlot, 60% Cabernet Sauvignon, 7% Cabernet Franc. The 2014 will be the debut vintage of this second wine but the 2015 is the first to be shown en primeur. Sweet mulberry juice on the nose. Very sweet indeed. Lacks a bit of freshness. Very polished and floral. Not exactly serious but it may provide short-term pleasure.

Score: 15 - 16
