Tasting Notes

Tasted single blind at Southwold. The La Dame -05 is introspective and disjointed on the nose with moderate definition. There are aromas of blackberry, damson and a touch of fig but I am sure that aeration would make this blossom. Lighter chassis here, fine tannins but rather conservative and foursquare. Earthy, pain grille, a little graphite, nice definition on the finish but it could do with more stuffing. Give it time to reopen. Drink 2013-2020. Tasted January 2009.

Somewhat monolithic compared to the top second wines of the northern Medoc classified growths, the soft, richly fruity, dark ruby/purple-tinged 2005 La Dame de Montrose offers elegant, but restrained aromas of ripe fruit, loamy soil, and a touch of spice. Drink this pure, medium-bodied, excellent offering over the next decade.

Robert Parker, Wine Advocate, RobertParker.com Maturity: 2008-2018 30 April 2008

A sleeper selection, the estate’s second wine, the 2005 La Dame de Montrose, is a blend of 54% Cabernet Sauvignon and 46% Merlot. Possibly the finest second wine Montrose has yet produced, it is a full-bodied effort with supple tannins as well as surprising power, richness, and expansiveness. It will provide gorgeous drinking during its first 15 years of life.

(54% cabernet sauvignon and 46% merlot) Bright ruby-red. Raspberry and flowers on the nose. Juicy, leanish and very fresh, but not at all underripe. There's good flesh lurking, but, like the grand vin, this is a bit austere today, even a tad spiky. Finishes with hints of dark fruits and chocolate.

Stephen Tanzer, International Wine Cellar 01 May 2006

Exceptionally dark colour. Low-key nose but very deep and dark and concentrated. Full, sweet, round and ample. Very charming. Dry but not too tough. 13.2 per cent average alcohol with Merlot more than 14 per cent. A little bit dry and short on the finish. But hugely enjoyable even now!

Round and fruity, with lots of berry and mineral character. Full-bodied, with velvety tannins and a long finish. Pretty.

James Suckling, Wine Spectator 01 April 2006

54% Cabernet Sauvignon, 46% Merlot representing 17% of the production, La Dame de Montrose is a smart buy offering good value for money at a fraction of the price of the Grand Vin. A very classic Cabernet nose of blackcurrants and lead pencil. Round and soft in the mouth with well-integrated ripe tannins and an easygoing finish. A lovely second wine that will provide very good early drinking.
