Tasting Notes

A blend of 55% Cabernet Sauvignon, 40% Merlot and 5% Petit Verdot, this is a relatively big 2005 and somewhat larger than usual for Chasse-Spleen. The wine offers fairly high tannin but ripe, concentrated fruit. Dense, youthful ruby/garnet in color, with notes of cassis, saddle leather and spice, this wine could use another several years of cellaring and should keep 15+ years.

Robert Parker, Wine Advocate, RobertParker.com Maturity: 2015-2030+ 29 June 2015

Deep plum/ruby-colored to the rim, the medium-bodied 2005 Chasse Spleen offers up aromas of smoke, damp earth, charcoal, black cherries, and currants. The tannins dominate at present, so purchasers should cellar it for 5-6 years, and consume it over the following two decades.

A beautiful offering from this top-notch Moulis estate, the deep ruby/purple-tinged 2005 Chasse Spleen offers up scents of cassis, minerals, and flowers. Medium-bodied, moderately tannic, rich, and potentially outstanding, it should be at its peak between 2012-2020+.

The nose is closed at the moment with touches of wet tobacco, autumn leave, black fruits, wild hedgerow and tar. The palate is medium-bodied with fine tannins, very precise and refined with a brooding intensity on the finish. The palate is far more promising that the nose at the moment, but this is a stylish Chasse Spleen that has stepped up the plate since a couple of years ago. Tasted July 2011.

Bright crimson. Hidden but intriguing nose suggesting hidden depths and some complexity. Pretty classic left bank red Bordeaux with lovely 2005 velvety texture but really sappy dry, but not drying, tannins. The most classic of this flight of 2005 Médocs?

Jancis Robinson MW, JancisRobinson.com Maturity: 2014-2023 31 July 2009

Shows blackberry and fresh mushroom on the nose. Medium-bodied, with soft tannins and an aftertaste of chocolate and delicate fruit. Best after 2012. 36,730 cases made.

James Suckling, Wine Spectator Maturity: 2012+ 31 March 2008

Lovely berry, spice and cherry character. Full-bodied, with fine yet chewy tannins and a long finish. Structured and well-formed

Score: 89

Red-ruby. Cool aromas of blackberry and mint. Quite primary and unevolved today, with reasonably intense dark fruit flavors currently suppressed by a streak of acidity that gives the finish a dry edge. Seems a bit underripe/overripe today and is showing awkwardly.

Celine Villars and her husband Jean-Pierre Foubet have been making impressive wines here since the 2000 vintage, with Chasse Spleen now confirmed as a perennial Bordeaux value. The 2005 is rich on the nose with wild strawberry and raspberry leaf character. On the palate there is good weight of fruit with some chocolate and spice and a ripe charming texture. Finishes well with smooth tannins.
