Tasting Notes

One of the finest wines I have tasted from this estate, the 2005 Cos Labory exhibits a deep ruby/purple hue, aromas of road tar, blackberries, creme de cassis, forest floor, smoke, and graphite, medium to full body, and abundant tannin. It is a complete, dense effort with high tannins in the finish. Once the tannins melt away, it should represent an outstanding example of the vintage. Anticipated maturity: 2015-2030.

Score: 89

The 2005 is the finest effort I have tasted from this estate in many years. Its deep ruby/purple color is followed by aromas of graphite, blueberry liqueur, espresso, and roasted herbs. Impressively constituted, medium to full-bodied, tannic, and rich, it is the most complete and intense Cos Labory I have ever tasted. Anticipated maturity: 2013-2025+.

Cos Labory is another estate that has made its finest wine in decades. The medium-bodied, structured, pure 2005 exhibits notes of creme de cassis, roasted herbs, and blueberries. Consume this impressively endowed St.-Estephe between 2013-2023.

Score: 88 - 91

Blackish crimson. Inky, rather pure and svelte. Very tight and neat and well drawn though pretty tough and austere on the finish. Classic though. Very, very like sucking on a stone!

Score: 17

Jancis Robinson MW, JancisRobinson.com Maturity: 2017-2027 01 April 2006

A silky and simple red with plum and berry character. Firm and silky tannins, with a medium finish. Slightly short, but could move up a notch after aging.

Score: 85 - 88

James Suckling, Wine Spectator 01 April 2006

Enviably situated opposite Cos d’Estournel, this fifth growth has been building on an uninspiring past to improve quality with efforts rewarded by a well-made and impressive 2003. The 2005 shows off a nose of smoke and soy sweetness. There is nice weight of fruit on the palate with very firm tannins and dryness on the finish. Should be good value.
