Tasting Notes

Bright medium red. Slightly brooding, mineral-driven aromas of dark raspberry, crushed rock and rose petal; with aeration, this premier cru showed good floral lift and a piquant note of blood orange. Dense, spicy and modestly sweet, displaying the fullness of the vintage along with elements of sour cherry and saline minerality. Finishes firm and savory, with tongue-dusting tannins and lovely subtle rising length. Delivers impressive density without excess weight. (92+)

The 2015 Nuits Saint-Georges 1er Cru Les Cailles comes from Bouchard's single hectare of vines. It has an expressive bouquet with raspberry coulis, wild strawberry and a touch of fig, nicely delineated and focused. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannin, grippy raspberry and tart red cherry fruit with a touch of spice enlivening the energetic finish that is enhanced, given an edge, by the 40% whole cluster fruit. This should be worth looking out for once in bottle.

There is ample wood framing the softly earthy and very ripe aromas that are composed primarily of cassis and spiced tea. The suave, round and sappy medium weight flavors exude a fine bead of minerality on the concentrated and serious yet refined finish that displays a hint of youthful austerity. This too is quite impressive and should reward extended cellaring yet be approachable after 6 to 8 years.
