Tasting Notes

Tasted at the Langoa-Barton vertical in London. A stunning 2005 that over-achieves..and some. A lucid garnet colour. There is a sumptuous, almost decadent quality to the nose with notes of raspberry, black plum, mulberry, just a hint of Seville orange marmalade, all with wonderful definition and freshness. The palate is full-bodied with a velutinous entry. An unashamedly seductive Langoa with very fine tannins and a tangible lightness of touch married with immense purity. The middle and finish have an unerring symmetry whilst the finish is about as seamless as Saint Julien can get (actually redolent of a less turbo-charged Leoville Las-Cases.) Moderate length: blackberry, tobacco and a touch of pepper on the finish. A Langoa that I suspect is more for medium- rather than long-term drinking like its sibling. But who cares...delicious! Drink 2012-2030. Tasted April 2009.

Very opulent and flattering at first and then slightly chewy oak notes. Very embryonic. When will the oak ever soften, I wonder?

Score: 17

Jancis Robinson MW, JancisRobinson.com Maturity: 2018-2030 31 July 2009

Good ruby-red. Rich plummy aroma. Deep and chewy if a bit youthfully sullen, with sweet flavors of redcurrant, mocha and tobacco. Finishes with chewy tannins. Distinctly fatter than the 2006 but a bit less chocolatey and dark in its flavor presentation.

Stephen Tanzer, International Wine Cellar 01 May 2008

This primordial-styled, incredibly tannic St.-Julien reveals a dense purple color along with aromas of roasted meats, tapenade, cassis, melted licorice, and chocolate. Following the promising aromatic display, the wine shuts down in the mouth, revealing only excruciating tannin and good acidity. It will not be ready to drink for at least 15 years. Anticipated maturity: 2020-2040.

Robert Parker, Wine Advocate, RobertParker.com Maturity: 2020-2040 30 April 2008

A behemoth possessing huge tannin, density, and extract as well as mouth-searing levels of firepower, this inky/purple-tinged St.-Julien is a classic vin de garde offering notes of high class tobacco smoke, cedar, black currants, incense, and subtle wood. Potential purchasers over the age of 50 may want to reconsider, as this wine will require a decade of cellaring. Anticipated maturity: 2015-2035.

Gorgeous blackberry, currants and light toasted oak. Exotic. Full-bodied, juicy and velvety, with loads of fruit. Long and delicious. Almost 95-100. Great value.

James Suckling, Wine Spectator 01 April 2006

Anthony Barton produces classic Saint Julien at this vineyard which lies on the opposite side of the road from Leoville Barton. Frequently one of the best value buys, it is always one of the most sought-after wines en primeur and will be in strong demand again this year as the the 2005 is a beauty. Very deep colour with a very expressive, highly perfumed nose. Very dense with rich seductive stone fruit on the palate and finely textured tannins.
