Tasting Notes

This wine is glorious - so to speak - with loads of exuberant fruit and plenty of cedary forest floor, Christmas fruitcake, blackcurrant and cherry fruit. This dark ruby/purple-colored wine is again an over-achieving beauty. Drink it over the next 15 or so years.

Score: 90

Robert Parker, Wine Advocate, RobertParker.com Maturity: 2015-2030 01 June 2015

A big-time sleeper of the vintage, this St.-Julien reveals notes of tapenade, spice box, cedar, sweet black cherries, and black currants. An opulent texture, terrific fruit, medium to full body, and abundant concentration suggest this stunning Gloria will provide plenty of pleasure over the next 15 years.

Score: 90

One of the finest Glorias I have ever tasted, the dense ruby/purple-tinged 2005 reveals a big, sweet perfume of black olives, black cherries, cassis, spice box, and cedar. Boasting terrific fruit, medium to full body, and more power and richness than usual, it will provide delicious drinking during its first two decades of life.

Score: 90 - 92

As usual, the dark ruby/purple-colored 2005 Gloria is a model of the fruit-driven, minimally-oaked style of Bordeaux winemaking. It reveals a broader structure and more density and delineation than usual along with tremendous ripeness, sweet fruit, and moderate tannin. This hedonistic St.-Julien will benefit from 2-3 years of bottle age, and last for 12-15.

Score: 88 - 90

Robert Parker, Wine Advocate, RobertParker.com Maturity: 2008-2021 30 April 2006

Quite toasty and developed on the nose. Forward and easy - perhaps not the most ambitious but a nicely balanced drink with just a hint of dark chocolate. This was the group favourite.

Score: 17

Jancis Robinson MW, JancisRobinson.com Maturity: 2013-2020 31 July 2009

Very dark crimson. Gassy and youthful on the nose. Sweet and slightly floral. Exuberant, not especially subtle, but a big galumphing mouthful of ripe fruit.

Score: 16

Jancis Robinson MW, JancisRobinson.com Maturity: 2014-2022 01 April 2006

Red-ruby. Leather, mocha and a whiff of game on the nose; less pure and expressive today than the 2006. Big and rich but not particularly fruity. Presents a somewhat awkward combination of impressive volume and leafy cabernet. Finishes with tough, somewhat rustic tannins. (88+?)

Score: 88

Stephen Tanzer, International Wine Cellar 01 May 2008

Licorice, blackberry and fresh cèpe on the nose. Full and velvety-textured, with lots of fruit and a long, caressing finish. Pretty and rich. The best Gloria in years. Best after 2014. 18,000 cases made.

Score: 92

James Suckling, Wine Spectator Maturity: 2014+ 31 March 2008

This shows a lovely silky texture and ripe fruit ranging from plums to chocolate to toasted oak. Full-bodied, with velvety tannins and a long, rich finish. Juicy young red. Very close to 92-94.

Score: 89 - 91

James Suckling, Wine Spectator 01 April 2006

Uniquely this property is neither Cru Bourgeois nor Classed Growth, though it is made up of land purchased in the forties from Beychevelle, Leoville Poyferre, and Gruaud Larose. An underperformer in recent years, Gloria impressed with its 2003. In 2005, the nose is extremely opulent and ripe with spice and cloves. Super-sweet fruit and slightly medicinal notes dominate on the palate before a robust, fairly hot finish.
