Tasting Notes

The 2015 Clos de Vougeot Grand Cru has a perfumed, peppermint-tinged bouquet, turning more to cough drop scents with aeration. The palate is medium-bodied, offering supple tannin, good balance, smooth texture, well-judged acidity and a silky, sensual, almost flirtatious finish. It may have put on a little too much "makeup" in the winery, but there is undoubtedly a pretty wine underneath. Tasted blind at the annual Burgfest tasting.

The 2015 Clos de Vougeot Grand Cru has a clean and pure bouquet with raspberry preserve, cranberry cordial and light slate aromas developing in the glass, although they took five to eight minutes to really get going (unlike the more immediate Chambertin for example). The palate is medium-bodied with succulent ripe red cherry and raspberry fruit, crisp acidity, quite saline in the mouth with plenty of sappiness on the finish. I would have just liked a little more sustain on the aftertaste, but otherwise this is fine.

A distinctly earthy nose is composed of very fresh red and dark currant laced with humus and underbrush nuances that are trimmed in notes of oak and menthol. The concentrated, serious and powerful broad-shouldered flavors possess a round and relatively supple mid-palate that contrasts substantially with the firm and youthfully austere if slightly warm finale. This is going to require moderately extended cellaring to resolve the prominent tannic spine.

Dense plum and cherry nose. The palate is rich and broad, with fine breadth of fruit and no hint of rusticity. Very concentrated and taut, this seems well balanced and harmonious, and the tannins are discreet for Clos Vougeot.
