This is also quite generously oaked though it's still possible to appreciate the cool and pure nose that exhibits aromas of essence of red and dark currant, earth, spice and violet. There is excellent energy and muscle to the succulent and sappy broad-shouldered flavors that possess fine length if not quite the same complexity as the best in the range. Dark red with ruby tones. Very ripe aromas of blueberry, violet and spicy oak, along with suggestions of exotic fruits. Plush and fat with fruit, conveying an extravagant impression of sucrosité--and rather low acidity--to its flavors of cherry liqueur and chocolate. This wine will need time in bottle to burn off some of its substantial baby fat. Finishes with substantial dusty tannins and a repeating chocolatey quality (one of the two barrels was new) that's a bit overbearing today. A rather exaggerated style of 2015 but many tasters will swoon for its sweetness and richness. Score: 91 - 93 Stephen Tanzer, Vinous.com 01 January 2017 |
