Tasting Notes

The superstar among this group of wines is the 2013 Cabernet Franc, which comes from a block actually located within the larger To Kalon Vineyard. A blend of 97% Cabernet Franc and 3% Cabernet Sauvignon planted in 1989, the wine has velvety tannins and a glorious nose of black raspberries, spring flowers and black currants. It is elegant but powerful, and it is more than a passing fancy that this wine represents a Napa version of the famous St.-Emilion Cheval Blanc. Fabulous depth and length but wonderful finesse are characteristics of this wine, which can be drunk now or cellared for another 12-15 years.

Detert's 2013 Cabernet Franc is rich, deep and powerful, with plenty of intense dark fruit backed up by a spine of firm tannin that gives the wine its sense of proportion. Dark red stone fruits, mocha, spices and crushed flowers add myriad of shades of nuance. This structured yet delicate and nuanced Cabernet Franc needs at least a few years in bottle to soften, but it is impressive.
