In almost stark contrast to the expressiveness of the Folatières, this is brooding to the point of being almost aromatically mute though aggressive swirling confirms that the underlying fruit is ripe and clean. There is a highly seductive mouth feel to the textured, dense and beautifully complex medium-bodied flavors that coat the palate with dry extract, all wrapped in a tight, clean, intense and long finish. This potentially excellent effort is notably tighter and more structured and will need more cellar time as well. Patience required. Outstanding

(from 40-year-old vines; brother's Jacques's adjacent vines in Referts are ten years older): Pale, bright yellow. Ripe, muted aromas of yellow peach and smoke. Reticent on the palate as well, with ripe flavors of candied yellow fruits complicated by intriguing saline minerality. In a more masculine, youthfully closed style than the Folatieres, showing firm acidity and a tight finish. "A connoisseur's wine," says Carillon. This will benefit from five years in the cellar.
