Tasting Notes

Tasted at the Domaine de Chevalier vertical in London. A deep garnet core. The nose is a rather conservative: an accountant’s nose playing it safe and not wishing to dance at the party. Dense black, toasty fruits, cassis, a touch of violets but it is all very contained rather than bursting forth from the glass. The palate has an understated entry although the mid-palate does demonstrate very nice balance and delineation, good acidity, a rather coy Domaine de Chevalier that is rather linear towards the leafy finish with notes of blackberry and black plum. (88+ Points)

Licorice, blackberry, grilled meat and lightly toasted oak. Turns to flowers. Full-bodied, with very silky tannins, pretty fruit and a delicate finish. Fabulous nose, but more reserved on the finish. Drink now.

Quite dark with a pale rim. Sweet, evolved nose - very ‘classic’. Fully evolved but nicely balanced. Great lunchtime claret for now!

Jancis Robinson MW, JancisRobinson.com Maturity: 2004-2012 06 April 2006

This dark ruby-colored Domaine de Chevalier reveals aggressive spicy new oak in the nose, along with notions of tobacco, smoke, and black cherries. While medium-bodied and stylish, it lacks the necessary depth to qualify as one of the stars of the vintage.

Score: 87

Robert Parker, Wine Advocate, RobertParker.com Maturity: 2002-2015 01 April 2001

An excellent effort from Domaine de Chevalier, this dark ruby/purple-colored 1998 exhibits smoky, tobacco-tinged, earthy scents intermixed with black currant and cherry fruit. There is impressive concentration, medium body, sweet tannin, and a supple, ripe finish. It should be ready to drink early, yet continue to develop further nuances and complexity for 10-15 years.

Medium red-ruby. Plum syrup, cassis, tobacco, mocha and a faint whiff of cardboard on the nose. Initially fat and supple in the middle, with notes of tar and tobacco, but grew a bit drier in the glass. Finishes with slightly green, dry-edged tannins. This was difficult to assess a year ago and is still hard to figure.
