Tasting Notes

Pure, floral aromas of lemon, lime and talc. Sweet, juicy and pliant, with an intriguing element of salinity and firm acidity framing and lifting the flavors of pear, lemon, spices and licorice. A rather easygoing wine in the context of the vintage but with no lack of freshness.

There is a hint of burnt match stick to the otherwise densely fruited nose that displays notes of citrus and various white orchard fruit scents. The powerful and voluminous middle weight plus-sized flavors possess solid mid-palate density before culminating in a sappy and palate coating finale. This won't win any awards for elegance but it doesn't lack for size and character.

The 2014 Chassagne-Montrachet 1er Cru Morgeots was pumping on all cylinders. It has a lovely lime and peach skin bouquet that delivers great intensity, voluminous and convincing. The palate is tensile on entry, a touch of white pepper and linseed, leading to a refined and again, quite Meursault-like finish. This is a delicious, complex Morgeot from Cecile Gagnard. Fontaine-Gagnard is a Chassagne domaine that has really upped the ante in recent vintages, and has provoked discussion among Burgundy cognoscenti who noticed a shift in style to ever more precise and complex expressions of respective terroirs. A large part has been due to the change in generations. Since Celine Fontaine has taken the reins, there has been a drive towards quality that is clearly tangible in the wines. Moreover, she always comes across as an intelligent, thoughtful, candid and passionate winemaker, so much so that I could quite easily sit and chat with her all day. She’s a winemaker that seems to be more “switched on” than others, considering not only the quality of her wines but also their distribution and perception beyond the confines of Burgundy.
