Tasting Notes

The 2015 Bourgneuf has a backward nose that demands some coaxing from the glass: broody, tertiary black fruit laced with bay leaf and cedar. The palate is medium-bodied with grippy tannin, fresh black fruit bisected by a keen line of acidity and feeling a little pointed on the finish when I would like just a tad more flesh. Yet I admire the tension here, and I have a feeling that it will repay bottle age.

The 2015 Château Bourgneuf has a crisp and quite earthy, blackberry and briary scented bouquet that just needs to coalesce during its élevage. The palate is medium-bodied with steely tannin, quite pointed acidity, fresh in the mouth with moderate weight, hints of licorice surfacing towards the linear finish. Note that a second sample at JP Moueix showed more elegance and poise on the velvety finish. Give this 3-5 years in bottle.

Score: 90 - 92

Neal Martin, Wine Advocate Maturity: 2020-2040 01 April 2015

The 2015 Bourgneuf is composed of 90% Merlot and 10% Cabernet Franc, featuring a medium garnet-purple color and aromas of smoked meats, black truffles, tapenade and charcoal with a fruity core of black and red cherries, plum preserves and blueberry coulis plus a waft of aniseed. Medium to full-bodied, delicately structured and with lively fruit expression, it finishes on an earthy note.

Lisa Perotti-Brown MW, Wine Advocate Maturity: 2019-2029 21 February 2018

Saturated with fig flavors, showing boysenberry and black currant compote notes. Ganache and tobacco accents fill in the finish, giving this a gutsy profile. Best from 2020 through 2030.

Score: 92

James Molesworth, Wine Spectator Maturity: 2020-2030 10 January 2018

A flattering wine in the making, with a velvety feel from start to finish, offering warm plum, blueberry and boysenberry fruit that cascades through the finish. Features a healthy dose of toast, but everything is integrated and the fruit will win out easily when the élevage is done.

Score: 91 - 94

James Molesworth, Wine Spectator 01 April 2016

Managed by the Moueix team, the 2015 Château Bourgneuf offers a darker, earthier style in its ripe black fruits, tobacco, earth, and underbrush scented bouquet. This gives way to a medium to full-bodied, nicely concentrated Pomerol that has ripe tannin and plenty of length. Drink this total charmer anytime over the coming decade or so.

Jeb Dunnuck Maturity: 2018-2028 30 November 2017

The 2015 Bourgneuf is ripe, racy and succulent, all qualities that give it considerable near and medium-term appeal. Sweet red stone fruit, mint, anise and wild flowers flesh out on the succulent, inviting finish. The Bourgneuf is an attractive, mid-weight Pomerol with lovely freshness. The blend is 90% Merlot and 10% Cabernet Franc. Tasted two times.

Antonio Galloni, 01 April 2016

Very dark. Lifted, fragrant, not one of the most intense but nicely balanced. Racy and toasty. Not perhaps absolutely top rank but not forced. (17- Points)

Jancis Robinson MW, Maturity: 2022-2034 01 April 2016

A super velvety textured red with a freshness and coolness. Full body, ultra-balanced and a savory finish. Super. Mostly merlot with a touch of cabernet franc.
