Tasting Notes

Tasted blind at Farr Vintner’s Left Bank tasting. A very earthy nose that verges on corky, though I do not think it is. The palate is medium-bodied with sharp tannins, good fruit intensity although it still needs a couple of years to meld together, Bright red-berried fruit dominating the finish, although it is raw and rustic. Tasted October 2010.

Score: 86

Fragrant, fully developed, very beguiling perfume. Richness on the palate with lots of pleasure and a texture not unlike dusty velvet. Not exactly classic but lots of fun to drink. A bit reminiscent of the 1990s in its opulence and hedonistic charm.

Score: 17

Jancis Robinson MW, JancisRobinson.com Maturity: 2007-2012 26 August 2009

The excellent 2003 has a deep ruby/plum color and a sweet nose of creme de cassis, licorice, dried herbs, and earth. It is fresh, rich, savory, with velvety-textured tannins and a supple mouthfeel. It should drink well for up to a decade. This is a sleeper of the vintage.

Score: 88

Robert Parker, Wine Advocate, RobertParker.com Maturity: 2006-2016 30 April 2006

A relatively fleshy, solidly constructed, deeply fruited St.-Estephe with a dense ruby/purple color, good black currant fruit tinged with some hints of blackberry as well as floral and mineral notes, good ripeness, low acidity, and a nice, corpulent mouthfeel, this is a wine that will provide delicious drinking over the next 7-10 years.

Robert Parker, Wine Advocate, RobertParker.com Maturity: 2005-2015 30 April 2005

The strongest effort from this estate since 1990, Phelan-Segur’s 2003 exhibits a deep ruby/purple color in addition to a sweet, jammy bouquet of black fruits intermixed with licorice, earth, and spice. Medium-bodied, with low acidity and fine tannin, this is a sleeper of the vintage.

Score: 87 - 89

Subtle yet rich aromas of currant, spice and smoke follow through to a full-bodied palate, with chewy tannins and a long, flavorful aftertaste. Very thick, almost syrupy. Impressive. Best after 2010. 23,000 cases made.

Score: 91

James Suckling, Wine Spectator Maturity: 2010+ 31 March 2006

(a 53/47 blend of cabernet sauvignon and merlot) Bright red-ruby. Slightly medicinal aromas of cassis, chocolate, licorice, violet and mint. Suave in the mouth, with ripe, moderately intense flavors of blueberry, blackberry and violet. Seems a bit soft and lacking in ultimate grip, but nicely ripe and floral. Finishes with slightly disjointed but ultimately sweet tannins.

Score: 86 - 89
