Tasting Notes

Still gutsy in feel, with a chunky core of plum skin, raspberry paste and bitter cherry fruit, backed by dried anise and a thread of singed apple wood on the finish. There's pleasant perfume in the background. This could stretch out and soften fairly quickly. Best from 2017 through 2023.

A somewhat disjointed and awkward wine, the 2013 Certan de May does not seem to be fully formed. Nevertheless, it possesses a deep color along with moderately well-endowed mulberry and black cherry fruit intermixed with hints of bay leaf and underbrush, light tannin and medium body. It appears to have plenty of stuffing, but it is in need of a complete identity. It should drink well for 8-12 years.

Bright red. Deep, complex aromas of strawberry, fresh blackcurrant, aromatic herbs and orange peel, complicated by a bright note of violet. Light and lively in the mouth, with juicy acidity giving the bright red and black fruit flavors an impression of weightlessness. Finishes brisk and clean. This is the lightest wine I recall being made here in the last 15 years, but I like its easy-drinking quality and overall balance.

The Certan-de-May has a lively bouquet that is a step up from the 2012, imbued with greater vivacity: plenty of cranberry, fresh red cherries and dried rose petals surfacing with time in the glass. The palate is medium-bodied with fine tannins. There is an earthiness to this Certan-de-May, perhaps a little foursquare and austere towards the finish, but I appreciate the precision of this Pomerol and its natural sensibility. Tasted April 2014.

Really plump, showy fruit on the palate. Lovely floral quality too. Very fine but high levels of tannin. Just a bit light on the finish, but the concentration is convincing enough.
