Tasting Notes

A subtle application of wood easily allows the mildly exotic and fresh aromas of ripe white and yellow orchard fruit, tangerine peel and lychee nut to be appreciated. As is usually the case the medium weight plus flavors are slightly bigger and richer than those of the Champ Canet yet the palate impression remains one of refinement and class on the lingering finish that displays focused power. This beautifully balanced effort will also require at least moderate patience. Sweet spot Outstanding

The 2014 Puligny-Montrachet 1Er Cru Les Combettes is much more reserved, aloof, stoic on the nose that its peers despite encouragement. The palate is fresh on the entry with green apple, Conference pear and a touch of white pepper, gently fanning out with that spicy element becoming more and more pronounced. This is a serious Puligny and it should be afforded 2-3 years in the cellar.

Good pale yellow. Deeper and nuttier than the Champ-Canet, offering scents of mirabelle, candied yellow fruits and menthol. Rich and moderately thick but with racy acidity giving lift and definition to the middle palate. Shows excellent leesy intensity and attractive violet lift. This is also a bit tannic and tight but comes across as more perfumed and lively than the Champ-Canet. With excellent punch, this wine is evolving slowly. Incidentally, this vineyard features a massale selection that Boudot uses for replanting missing vines in his other crus.

Score: 92 - 94
