Tasting Notes

‘Up to’ 15% new oak. Savoury nose with a hint of oak. Very solid and chewy and with real depth - but is there enough for €344.91 (sic) a bottle ex cellar? Some intensity, some definite sweetness and some spice, but not really enough drama for the price. Solid stuff but it’s a wine I can imagine being included in a comparative tasting of Montrachets and being in the middle of the pack. Builds on the palate though..

The 2014 Le Montrachet Grand Cru, which spent 12 to 13 months in French oak barrels with a modest 15% new oak, has a broodier bouquet compared to the Chevalier-Montrachet--flint and smoke aromas, accompanied by a faint marine influence. The palate is well balanced with decent weight in the mouth, a Le Montrachet that is "correct" but does not seem to want to put its neck on the line, unlike the Meursaults from Bouchard. Perhaps it is holding something back for the future?

Clove, flowers, iodine, crushed stone, sea salt, spearmint and lavender on the high-pitched nose. Utterly silky and fine-grained but more restrained today than the Cabottes. Perhaps a bit less complex on the palate in the early going than the Chevalier-Montrachet but already shows strong stony minerality. The superb, very smooth finish builds impressively and lingers.
