Tasting Notes

(30% new oak): Deep red with ruby highlights. Cool aromas of purple fruits complicated by a wild gamey element. High-pitched blue and black fruit flavors are framed by strong acidity and accented by a light peppery quality. A bit rigid in the early going due to its firm tannic spine but this wine shows impressive spicy intensity and inviting salinity. Mortet believes this will be best in ten years. (89+ Points)

A more complex and very pretty nose features notes of plum, wild red berries, plum, warm earth and plenty of sauvage character. There is fine richness and plenty of underlying tension to the utterly delicious medium-bodied flavors that exude evident minerality on the dusty, balanced and solidly persistent finish. This is firm but not hard and should drink well young if desired.

The 2013 Gevrey-Chambertin Mes Cinq Terroirs is a blend of fruit hitherto bottled as the Vieilles Vignes and the les Echanges because Arnaud felt that the young vines had come of age and the fruit had reached the same level. Matured in 30% new oak and racked after malolactic at the end of August, it has a well-defined, precise and yet intense bouquet with pure red cherry and wild strawberry scents. There are tangible mineral notes that translate onto the palate defined by taut tannins and a silver thread of acidity. The finish is both poised and linear, completing what is a welcome return for one of Mortet's best cuvées.

Score: 91 - 93
