Tasting Notes

Good dark red. Very floral, pure scents of blueberry, smoked meat, licorice and coffee; these vines were picked before the big weekend of rain in early October, according to Mortet. Wonderfully suave and floral in the mouth; not a fat style but boasts a fine-grained texture and enticing violet lift. Dense, precise, energetic wine, but will it ever match the 2014 for nuance? Finishes with very good focus and length. Mortet carried out a very soft extraction here, including "almost no pigeage." He explained: "We couldn't take the risk; we couldn't look for elements that weren't there. And of course we wanted to avoid vegetal tannins. You take what Nature gives you."

A cool, pure and wonderfully elegant nose displays notes of airy red and black pinot fruit, humus, smoked meat, spice and a pretty floral nuance, all of which is trimmed in enough wood to notice. Here too there is good richness to the strikingly intense, powerful and serious big-bodied flavors that are constructed on a firm base of minerality while being shaped by ripe tannins on the driving, balanced and beautifully persistent finish where the wood telegraphed by the nose reappears. A classic Chambertin of power and grace.

Matured entirely in new oak, the 2013 Chambertin Grand Cru has a beguiling, elegant bouquet that is beautifully defined with superb mineralité coming through with aeration. Nothing flamboyant, nothing overstated here. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannins, fine acidity, very harmonious, with a svelte texture and it positively glides toward the pure sorbet-like finish. The small number of owners will be glad they have some of this nectar - for me, one of the wines of the vintage.
