Tasting Notes

An explosive, exuberant bouquet makes a strong first impression in the 2013 Charmes-Chambertin. Those signatures follow onto the palate, where the Charmes is quite opulent. Dark cherries, plums, spices and new leather blossom in a decidedly racy, supple Charmes that should drink well with minimal cellaring.

This has that interesting just turned earth, forest floor and humus character that some Gevrey-based wines display that adds plenty of breadth to the very fresh red currant and dark berry suffused nose. There is fine richness and volume to the delicious, intense and muscular broad-shouldered flavors that possess very fine depth on the balanced and lingering finish where the supporting tannins are dense but fine. This is better than it usually is and this is one of the wines in the Rousseau stable that has shown marked improvement over the last few vintages.

Allen Meadows, Burghound Maturity: 2025+ 15 January 2015

The 2013 Charmes-Chambertin Grand Cru has an understated, elegant bouquet with fine delineation: bright redcurrant and pomegranate both vying for attention. The palate is underpinned by supremely fine tannins (borrowed from Clos-de-Bèze!) and very well-judged acidity. This is just a little angular for a Charmes-Chambertin at the moment, but that will harmonize by the time it is in bottle.

Score: 92 - 94
