Tasting Notes

Quite dark crimson still. Mealy nose - a bit indistinct. Round and fresh with a little greenness. Certainly not an opulent vintage in Margaux! Good ‘lunchtime claret’ but nothing stupendous. A little awkward and angular.

Jancis Robinson MW, JancisRobinson.com Maturity: 2012-2025 30 March 2011

A virile, muscular effort for this estate, the 2001 Palmer (a blend of 51% Cabernet Sauvignon, 44% Merlot, and 5% Petit Verdot) exhibits a saturated purple color to the rim. Although closed and backward, it is surprisingly powerful, layered, and formidably endowed, revealing hints of charcoal, black fruits, earth, and underbrush. There is a lot going on in this offering, but it needs 5-7 years of cellaring to resolve its high tannin.

The 2001 Palmer, a blend of 51% Cabernet Sauvignon, 44% Merlot, and 5% Petit Verdot, reveals a saturated purple color in addition to a gorgeous perfume of melted road tar intermixed with spring flowers, smoky blackberries, and cassis. Medium to full-bodied, with high tannin as well as tremendous fat, density, and length, this wine continues to gain weight and look better and better every time I go back to it. It should come close to rivaling the compelling 2000.

Robert Parker, Wine Advocate, RobertParker.com Maturity: 2008-2020 01 April 2003

The 2001 reveals less power and muscle than the 2000, and possibly less charm than the 1999. This blend of 51% Cabernet Sauvignon, 44% Merlot, and 5% Petit Verdot exhibits a dense ruby/purple color as well as a stylish nose of flowers, black fruits, and new oak. It offers a sweet attack, medium body, moderate tannin, and a crisp finish. Surprisingly, the acidity is lower in the 2001 than in the 2000. Fifty percent of the crop made it into the final blend. Yields were 44 hectoliters per hectare.

Robert Parker, Wine Advocate, RobertParker.com Maturity: 2006-2015 01 April 2002

Dark red. Expressive aromas of redcurrant, raspberry, dark plum, tobacco, graphite, minerals and flowers. Very suave and smooth on entry, then a bit closed in the middle palate. But this very young, firm Palmer boasts harmonious acidity, very good cut and excellent balance. Finishes with rather tight tannins that will need six or seven years to soften. (I was not able to taste the 2002 Palmer, which was being fined; Delfaut described it as more powerful and concentrated than the 2001.)

Stephen Tanzer, International Wine Cellar 01 May 2004

Extremely pretty, with flowers, berries, chocolate and spices. Full-bodied, with a solid core of fruit and ripe, silky tannins; long and caressing. Beautiful. Palmer shows wonderful refinement. Best after 2009.
