Tasting Notes

The 2014 Haut Bages Liberal has a slightly subdued bouquet at the moment: black fruit with woodland and cedar aromas, though I feel that vis-a-vis its peers, it needs more fruit to come through. The palate is better with redcurrant and cranberry, edgy in the mouth with slightly dry tannin on the finish. Saline on the finish, this is a decent Haut Bages Liberal, though it needs to knit together and gain more persistence in the mouth.

Score: 88

The Château Haut-Bages Libéral 2014 has generous bouquet with plush red cherry and crushed strawberry scents, touches of cassis developing in the glass. The palate is better with gently gripping tannin and an attractive grainy texture. It is nicely balanced with blackberry and graphite notes on the linear finish. Not a bad Pauillac 2014 with its pencil lead aftertaste, though it could do with a bit more flair.

Aromas of cassis bush and wet earth with oyster shell. Medium to full body, firm and juicy tannins and a delicious finish. A well-rounded wine. Fantastic depth. From biodynamically grown grapes. Try drinking in 2020.

Lots of good fruit here that give depth and seriousness. Full and juicy. Round tannins.

The 2014 Haut-Bages Liberal opens up nicely in the glass, with an intriguing combination of, juicy red-fleshed fruit underpinned by distinctly stony, chalky notes that give the wine much of its energy. Today, the tannins are a bit tightly wound. Still, there is plenty to admire in the wine's overall persistence and sense of proportion.

Low-key nose. Rather loose textured and then astringent. Not as focused as most of its peers. Just a little dull.

Jancis Robinson MW, JancisRobinson.com Maturity: 2022-2030 01 April 2015

A tight, sleek style, with red and black currant fruit, lined with edgy savory, cassis bush and iron notes. The long finish lets the cassis bush element play out.
